Heavy snowfall stops Pitt shuttles

Almost constant snowfall snarled Pitt's campus throughout the day, eventually slowing it to a halt.

More than six inches of snow fell on Pittsburgh as of 11:30 p.m., and the snow has interrupted Pitt shuttle service, PAT bus service, and a shutdown of the Safe Rider service.

Pitt cancelled its Saturday classes, according to Pitt spokesman John Fedele.

One of the last Port Authority buses went through Oakland at 9:55 p.m. At 10 p.m, the Port Authority of Allegheny County directed all of its drivers to finish their routes and then halt service for the night, according to the Port Authority's website.

On campus, Pitt's shuttles stopped running to upper campus before 10 p.m.

A recorded message answered several calls to the Safe Rider, listing the shuttle service's hours. The message directs callers to contact the Pitt Police in the event of an emergency. The Safe Rider service normally runs until 3 a.m. on Fridays.

The William Pitt Union closed at 11 pm. Casey Landman, the manager at the information desk said that the building manager allowed the staff to close the building because of the weather.

Thoroughfare remained mostly empty on Fifth Avenue. Ambulance services are still running as of 10:40 p.m.
