An Oltmann's Opinion on Pitt Basketball
Wed at 13:59pm on Nov 25th, 2009
It was a solid trip to Kansas City for the Pitt Panthers this week. Even with the loss to No. 3 ranked Texas, Pitt showed that they can play with the elite of college basketball this season. The Panthers lost to the Longhorns 78-62 but took a two point lead into halftime and kept the game close for much of the second half. This is coming on the heels of the Panthers defeat of Wichita State the day before, who went on to soundly beat Iowa the next night.
So now that Pitt knows that it can at least compete with the big dogs again this season after losing four starters from last season, a bigger question remains. Who will start at guard once Jermaine Dixon returns from injury in a couple weeks?
Redshirt freshman Travon Woodall has looked very impressive at point guard and is the team’s best ball handler so he almost assuredly will run the point for the foreseeable future. He has a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio which is always a recipe for success and his lightning quick speed allows him to beat defenders down the court and off the dribble. Ashton Gibbs has looked strong at shooting guard with his always dangerous outside shot and is leading the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game. Then there’s junior guard Brad Wannamker who has been starting at small forward but is still a guard at heart. He is second on the team with 10.6 points per game and is one of the team’s leaders. Throw in senior transfer Chase Adams who has shown he can play, and play well, at this level after transferring from Centenary in August and the Panthers will have a lineup full of capable guards one Dixon is back.
Dixon showed last season that he is an important person to have in the lineup, not just because of his senior experience, but because he is a lock down defender. Dixon almost always guards the opposing teams best perimeter player and that type of defense is something coach Jamie Dixon is a huge advocate of. After talking with a player on the team, not even he is sure of what the starting lineup will look like, or even what the distribution of minutes will be, one Dixon returns.
Yet, one thing that is clear is that with all of these players making a case for themselves is one of those problems that coaches love to have.

Halfway through the year SPIN tipped their hand by offering the 20 Greatest Albums Of 2009 ... So Far. If you remember, the list wasn't in any specific order. Their 40 Best

they were spun a bit more: Peter Bjorn And John, Blk Jks, Regina Spektor, Glasvegas, Mavado, and Sa-Ra Creative Partners are nowhere to be found. The list -- one of oh so many
