An Olt-mann's Opinion on Pitt Basketball: Panthers return to the Big Apple

The Panthers may not be playing at the Pete on Tuesday night, but they might as well be. They will tip-off against Indiana at 9 p.m. in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden which has quickly become the team’s “home away from home”.

Since the 2000-2001 season Pitt has accumulated a 23-9 overall record at the Garden, but that’s the least of their accomplishments.

Maybe the best of those wins came on December 20, 2007 when they beat Duke 65-64. In that game New York City native Levance Fields hit a three with the clock winding down in overtime to seal the win for the Panthers against the then No. 7 ranked Blue Devils.

Since that time they’ve also been to seven Big East Tournament Championship games that are annually held at the World’s Most Famous Arena.

And speaking of New York natives, Pitt currently boasts three of them that will make a homecoming when the team faces the Hoosiers. Travon Woodall, Ashton Gibbs and Dante Taylor are the latest of Pitt’s New York area players. The Pitt program has developed a strong pipeline to that area that was really started by former assistant coach Barry Rohrssen who has since moved on to be the head coach at Manhattan College.

He recruited former players like Chris Taft, Carl Krauser, Ronald Ramon, Keith Benjamin and Levance Fields just to name a few who all hailed from the Big Apple.

One of the big reasons those players came to Pitt was being able to watch the team do so well right in their backyard. So, needless to say, with a win against Indiana maybe the Panthers can lure the next in a long line of New York City players to play for Pitt.
