Commencement to feature Tom Ridge

With graduation coming up on April 29, some soon-to-be grads are soon to be busy before turning that tassel. The ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center and will feature speaker Tom Ridge, former Pennsylvania governor and first Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

It's 8:15 p.m. in the Kurtzman Ballroom. There are only 30 minutes before that night's drag show starts. Makeup is abundant, hair is high, there's a perfume fragrance in the air and for junior John Musser, there is only one question remaining. "Where the f--- are my hoop earrings?" Serving as the master of ceremonies, Musser ushered in the Rainbow Alliance's sixth annual Drag Show as part of Pride Week on campus last Thursday night in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room.

Former student looks for family

Many have compared the story of Thomas Brooks, a Pitt grad, to that of presidential candidate Barack Obama. On Friday, Brooks returned to share his inspirational story with the Pitt community. Brooks grew up in Pittsburgh with a devoted divorced mother who struggled to make ends meet, loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and lots of cousins.

Ethnographer addresses inner-city, racial issues

Elijah Anderson saw many of the problems facing various black communities personally, and he has dedicated himself to helping solve them. A board member of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Anderson has dedicated his life's work to studying race and poverty in the inner city.
