Local bar special sparks debate

Imagine your favorite local bar nicknamed its daily special after a racial slur. Would you boycott it? Some students are doing just that. The Garage Door Saloon at the corner of Atwood and Sennott streets in Central Oakland has several signs advertising beer specials outside its door.

Free the Planet talks bag tax with Peduto

City Councilman William Peduto met with Pitt environmental club Free the Planet Wednesday night to discuss eliminating the use of plastic bags in grocery stores in Pittsburgh. Free the Planet has highlighted plastic bags as a problem because instead of biodegrading they photodegrade, which releases toxins into the soil, waterways and food chain indirectly.

Pitt students gathered in the Petersen Events Center yesterday to watch the men's basketball team top Oral Roberts University 82-63 live from Denver. Pitt advances to the next round of the NCAA Tournament and will face Michigan State on Saturday.

Regarding the waterboarding of Guantanamo Bay inmate Abu Zubaida, John Kiriakou said, "it's a terrible thing that it was done but necessary at the time." Kiriakou, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer, spoke to a half-full David Lawrence lecture hall yesterday.

Foer 'never wrote what he wanted to'

Not many speakers can form a speech around Jewish jokes, but best-selling Jewish author Jonathan Safran Foer, who spoke in David Lawrence Hall last night, addressed the ways in which humor can heal, recognize and even be religious. A packed auditorium listened to Foer, who said that laughter is essential for the Jewish faith, and the reason why these jokes are funny is because they help form a sense of community against feelings of loneliness and alienation.
