The Tribune Review got wrong information pertaining to the ENS messages sent to students' phones and e-mails. Here is what MY PITT EMAIL SAID: "G 20 disturbances may continue tonight. Be careful. exercise good judgement.
Safety Tips at my. pitt. e d u "
AND..."Conditions may be deteriorating in Oakland. Students are advised to remain near their residences"
It did not advise students to stay away from Schenley Square, but rather remain near residences. The messages were sent on friday.
So what's the problem here? Apparently Chief Delaney was either misquoted or twisted the facts. The evidence is all over YouTube that riot police "invaded" outside areas of residence halls and used OC gas right under the windows of students' rooms, not to mention trapping students on the stairs to the bridge connecting Litchfield to Posvar. So if students in the Quad area outside, they were near their halls and safe, right?
The police were severely out of line, acting the way they did on OUR university. This is where we are to feel safe and have our safety looked after by the police of the city and the university. To be honest, I didn't expect to be gassed by the ones who were supposed to protect us and chase myself and girls in high heels with dresses into a hotel lobby with rubber bullets/bean bags.
Now with being told to disperse, where could we have dispersed to? The police continually chased and surrounded students and protesters in areas where they can be held. I saw a large group of people running to the Peterson Events Center where I was told they were also gassed. The only obvious reason why people were there is because they were being directed up there. Everywhere I turned there were riot police, which meant you can't go that way unless you desire some kind of physical harm.
Never would I have expected such decisions to come from the people who I have come to trust as the protectors of my city. To break up a peaceful gathering where Duck Duck Goose and hackey sack were being played and families chased off who were expecting a concert that evening and enjoying the night, it was madness. That trust I had is now in question.

Here is the link to the Trib that posted the story. Any Pitt student can confirm that these are the messages sent and the YouTube videos supply the evidence.
an excerpt:
"#4. 'Direct action is unnecessary where people have freedom of speech.'
In a society dominated by an increasingly narrowly focused corporate media, it can be almost impossible to initiate a public dialogue on a subject unless something occurs that brings attention to it. Under such conditions, direct action can be a means of nurturing free speech, not squelching it. Likewise, when people who would otherwise oppose an injustice have accepted that it is inevitable, it is not enough simply to talk about it: one must demonstrate that it is possible to do something about it...."
I think I will go to protest, not the G20, but the Pittsburgh police and the Pittsburgh Administrator(s) who allowed them to harass us students. I think we as students should be able to assemble without interference, especially in a university commons.
If students had left the first, second... eighth time police told them to leave, they would not have had to use force of any type. Yes, the assembly took place on Pitt's campus which does and should belong to the students, but the are some extreme cases that require vacancy if it for the safety of Oakland.
