What We Learned from the Olympics

During midterm week I had as much time to update Back to the Point as you probably had time to read it. Now that it’s break, though, it’s time to catch up on everything hockey.

I learned a couple things from the Olympics:

It’s tournament time.

With the Big East tournament having already tipped off this week and the NCAA tournament less than a week away, the most exciting time in college sports (and maybe all sports) is under way. The Panthers have the luxury of being spectators for the first two days in Madison Square Garden as they earned the No. 2 seed and a double-bye in the tournament.

I am excellent at calorie estimation. It's quite ridiculous actually. If you ask me how many calories are in a meal, or single food, or anything, I'm generally only off by about 10 calories. And what is 10 calories? A french fry. I'm usually only off by a single french fry.

This "talent" of mine is actually just likely from years and years of pouring over nutrition labels. Unfortunately, most people don't study labels so closely. They may glance at the calories and fat content, but what they most likely fail to notice is the serving size.

Student found dead at CMU fraternity house

A 22-year-old man was found dead at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house at Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon, according to Pittsburgh police. The student attended Pitt's Greenburg campus, police said.

Search committee meets to discuss finding a new provost

The Provost Search Committee met today to discuss finding a replacement for current Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor James Maher, who announced his retirement plans in November.

The committee, led by Vice Chancellor for Research Conduct and Compliance Randy Juhl, met today in 2700 Posvar Hall, inviting students and faculty to voice the qualities they would like Maher's successor to have. Representatives from each of Pitt's four regional campuses attended via videoconferencing.

Greeks choose tentative date for Pitt Dance Marathon

The Greeks have chosen a tentative date for the Pitt Dance Marathon, which they had to postpone because of last month’s historic snow storm.

The dance marathon, part of the Greek Week effort to raise money for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, will occur April 18 in the Fitzgerald Field House, if Panhellenic Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council receive approval from the administration.

As a kid, Roscoe C. Brown Jr. spent his time reading magazines that featured famous pilots and made model airplanes. Hopes of flying ran through his head.

Not many years later, Brown was flying for the United States. He was the squadron commander of the 100th Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group, otherwise known as the Tuskegee Airmen, during World War II.

No Makeup March, the grassroots brainchild of Lane and her friend Julianne Towers, is a month-long challenge issued to women encouraging them to eliminate makeup from their everyday routine.
